Conservation

Conservation efforts for América Tropical began in the 1970s, but the project continually lost momentum due to the challenges of fundraising. In 1988, The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) entered into a partnership with the City of Los Angeles to protect, conserve, present and interpret the mural. Along with conservation of the mural itself, a protective shelter, viewing platform and interpretive center were essential elements of the project.
